HEADSHOT TIPS

  • • Dress like you would for a job interview, or for a day on the job

    • If you love it, bring it! We recommend you wear an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. When you feel good, you look good!

    • Pants and shoes don’t matter as much. If you feel more confident in a full outfit, then by all means go for it, but focus on how your clothes look from your waist up.

    • For men, a collared shirt and a blazer is always a safe choice. If you are debating whether or not to wear a tie, think about your daily work environment. If it’s a little more relaxed, a button up shirt and blazer will look great, but if it’s a more formal environment you likely want to wear a suit + tie.

    • For women, you have much more freedom with what you wear! A nice shirt, blazer, or dress will be great. Just remember that your headshot is head + shoulders, so look in the mirror and make sure the neckline and sleeves are flattering. Jackets are always great for giving your body a flattering shape and bringing focus to your face. and a great way to add variety to your shots.

    • Avoid blouses and sweaters that have loose fabric, they can make you appear larger than you actually are and be hard to pose in.

    • I always recommend people do two looks - a casual option and a formal option. Formal could be suit and tie, or dress and blazer, and then the casual look could be a sweater or more relaxed shirt. It gives you variety and options to have in case you them down the road.

    • Bring options! You already went through the trouble of booking the session, doing your hair and makeup and getting to our studio. The last thing you want is to find out your blazer doesn’t sit right on your shoulders after reviewing our test shot.

    • Try to make sure your clothes are wrinkle free and lint free before you arrive! We have a steamer and lint roller available, but it can slow the process down a little.

  • • Solid photos photograph best, in colors darker than your skin tones

    • If you want a more modern/creative look, you can incorporate brighter colors or a patterned piece

  • • Less is more - don’t over accessorize.

    • For jewelry, keep it simple. You don’t want any pieces that take the focus off you. Simple earrings and If you can’t decide what jewelry to wear, feel free to bring options and we can help you pick

    • If you wear glasses all the time, we recommend you wear them in your headshot. You want to look like yourself so people recognize you. Some people do a shot with and without glasses if you want to have both options, or if you can’t decide. If you are worried about reflections, most lenses have anti glare coating on them, and we have tricks to remove any lingering reflections!

  • • Aim for a natural, polished look for your hair. Use hairspray to tame flyaways.

    • A fresh haircut is a great idea, but don’t get it the day before your session. We recommend doing it 2-3 days before to give it time to feel a little more normal.

    • For makeup, you’ll want to apply a little more than usual so it pops on camera. Plan to arrive camera ready, but if you aren’t sure what’s too much, bring your makeup bag so that if you feel washed out in photos, you have blush or lipstick on hand to add. You might also want some powder or lipstick to touch up in between shots.

    • If you don’t feel confident with your hair/makeup abilities, we offer professional hair + makeup services for men and women at our studio prior to your session.

    • Men - if you shave daily we recommend shaving a few hours before your session to avoid a 5 o’clock shadow. If you have a beard, make sure it’s neatly trimmed. Any bumps, redness or nicks from shaving can be easily removed when we retouch!

  • • If your company has given you any specifications for sizing or the look of your headshots, make sure to bring them or add them to the details when you book your appointment.

    • Relax! We know it can be uncomfortable to have your photo taken, but that’s why you hire a professional. We will set up awesome lighting, coach you on posing, and guide you through creating a natural expression. You got this!
